Hiking Down to Secret Cove Lake Tahoe: A Must See!

You’ve probably heard about Lake Tahoe in Nevada/California. In fact, you’ve probably seen photos of the blue, blue water and thought “Is that really in the US!?” But there is an amazing place called Secret Cove Lake Tahoe that is arguably the most stunning place of them all.
Secret Cove has some of the most stunning blue-green water and is known for its beauty. There’s no way to drive there, making it truly a bit of a secret. But with a quick downhill hike, you can see some of the most beautiful water in the country, or maybe even the world.
So let’s get into everything there is to know about Secret Cove Lake Tahoe and how you can see this incredible place for yourself!

Location
Just 30 minutes from Carson City, NV, Secret Cove Lake Tahoe is located on the Nevada side of the lake. It’s an easy drive and is also only an hour from Reno, NV.

If you are adding this beautiful place to a California/Nevada road trip, you’ll be looking at a 2.5 hour drive from Sacramento, CA, just under 4 hours from San Francisco, CA or a whopping 7 hours from Las Vegas, NV. But trust me, however you get here, seeing Secret Cove Lake Tahoe is totally worth the time and effort!
Fees and Parking Info
Parking and visiting Secret Cove Lake Tahoe is totally free! (A rarity in this area). Essentially you’ll be parking here. This parking lot is only open from Memorial Day to mid-October, weather permitting.
If you aren’t able to secure a spot in the parking lot, there is also parking along Highway 28, AFTER the no parking signs. I used this area when I visited, since the parking lot wasn’t open yet.
Because of its popularity, your payment should come in the form of keeping this beach clean. This means using the provided Port-O-Potties, cleaning up all trash, and leaving the beach better than you found it.
WARNING – This Is A Nude Beach
Before we get into all the details about Secret Cove Lake Tahoe, you need to be aware that this is a Nude Beach. While most visitors are not nude, there have been nude visitors each time I was there.
In other words, this is not a family friendly beach. If you have kids, I suggest heading to Chimney Beach instead, where you’ll get a very similar beauty!
Ok, now that you know where to go, where to park, and have been warned about the clothing-optional thing, let’s get into the hiking details!
Trail Stats of Secret Cove Lake Tahoe Trail
There are a few ways to reach Secret Cove Lake Tahoe, but the main way is this trail route. Essentially, you’ll be parking at the Secret Cove Parking Lot and following the trail down to the Secret Cove area.
- Mileage: 1 Mile
- Elevation Gain: ~200 Feet of gain on the way back to your car
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
While these stats are pretty easy, be aware that it’s easy to get down to Secret Cove, but the hike back is straight up hill. It’s not impossibly steep, but if you can’t handle any sort of incline, this hike isn’t for you.

Expected Time
If you are just planning on hiking the trail, seeing the beautiful water, and heading back, you’re looking at less than an hour of hiking.
On the other hand, if you are planning to add in Whale Beach and/or Chimney Beach, you’ll be looking at closer to 2 – 4 hours. This is also true if you are planning to sit and relax in the sand at Secret Cove. Just remember, you might be joined by a nude visitor if he/she pleases.
Now, let’s take a look at the hike my husband and I took so you have an idea of what to expect.
A Quick Note About the Water Color
One quick thing, you might be disappointed by the water color if you hike on a cloudy day. The water is still blue, but nothing compared to on a clear and sunny day.

The photo above is Secret Cove on a cloudy winter day in 2022. The hike is still very cool, but you won’t get the crystal clear water that is so often associated with Lake Tahoe. For the best photos and water color, try to hike this trail on a sunny day and when the sun is a little higher in the sky (after 10am). This will give you the best photos.
Now, onto our hike!
Our Hike
In the Spring of 2026, my husband and I parked along the side of Highway 28 and began our journey first thing in the morning. We were parked around 7:30 am and there were still plenty of spots. I don’t know how quickly the parking fills up in the Summer, but I would be prepared to get there early.
We hiked down to Whale Beach first, then over to Secret Cove, and continued onto Chimney Beach. They are all beautiful beaches! We then looped back to Secret Cove Lake Tahoe for one last look, and then headed back to our car.

All in all we logged about 5 miles on the trails in this area and we took our time taking photos and enjoying the beauty. In other words, we were out hiking or relaxing on the rocks for about 4 hours.
This entire area is gorgeous, and there are dozens of other hiking trails to check out! Here are a few that I visited while in the Lake Tahoe area.
Other Trails
First up is Vikingsholm Trail in Emerald Bay State Park. This trail starts at the Emerald Bay Overlook and we hiked down to the water. This area is gorgeous and you can find out all the information you’ll need at this Hiking the Vikingsholm Trail article.
Next up is another Nevada State Park called Cave Rock State Park. You can hike to the top of Cave Rock and feel like you’re on top of the world! This is also a beautiful area and worth visiting. You can find out all you need to know in this Cave Rock State Park article.

And finally, if you are looking to do a little hiking and beach hopping of your own, here are 5 Stunning Lake Tahoe Beaches (including Secret Cove Lake Tahoe) that you can check out. Again, these are all on the Nevada side of the lake and are stunning! You can find everything you need to know about these beaches in this 5 Stunning Lake Tahoe Beaches article.
Things To Do in the Area
If you’re looking for other things to do in the area, you’ll definitely want to check out all the little towns surrounding Lake Tahoe. Incline Village is adorable, Kings Beach is easy to access, and South Lake Tahoe has everything you could ever need.
So whether you want to go shop hopping, have a great meal, or spend more time on the trails, there is something for everyone in the Lake Tahoe region.
Conclusion
Secret Cove Lake Tahoe is an incredible place that you must see with your own eyes! The water is so blue and clear that even the best photos don’t do it justice. So make a plan and hike the short 1 mile trail down to Secret Cove!
