Are you looking for an easy trail in Joshua Tree National Park?  Then look no further than the Arch Rock Trail!  With a trail that is less than 1.5 miles long and pretty flat, you don’t get much easier than that.

And with a beautiful pay off of getting to see the famous Arch Rock in Joshua Tree, you don’t want to skip this one!  And if you’re feeling ambitious you can add the offshoot to Heart Rock as well.

So let’s jump into everything you need to know about hiking to Arch Rock in Joshua Tree National Park.

Important Links

Location

Arch Rock is right in the middle of Joshua Tree National Park. The trailhead for Arch Rock is located at the Twin Tanks Parking Lot.

The Arch Rock trailhead is 40 minutes from Joshua Tree, CA, about 3 hours from Los Angeles, CA and 4 hours from Las Vegas, NV.  This makes Joshua Tree a perfect place to add to a southern California road trip.

Fees

All national parks require a fee.  And Joshua Tree National Park is no different. Upon entry to this California park, you will need to purchase some sort of national park pass.

The standard vehicle fee pass is $30 and good for 7 days from purchase.  This covers everyone in the vehicle and this is what the average visitor will pay.  If you enter on a motorcycle, the fee is $25 and is also good for 7 days.

Joshua Tree Annual Pass Options

If you plan to visit Joshua Tree National Park multiple times in a 12 month period, you’ll want to purchase the $55 Annual Pass.  The annual pass gives you, and a vehicle full of guests, entry into Joshua Tree for a full year.  This pass can be purchased in the entry stands or the visitor centers.

And if you are a national-park-obsessed person (like me), you’ll want to purchase the America the Beautiful Pass.  This pass is $80 for US Residents and will give you and a car-full of guests entry into all Federal Recreation Areas for free for a year.

Ok, so you know the location and the fees, let’s get into some of the details about the hike!

Parking

Parking for the Arch Rock Trail is located at the Twin Tanks Parking Lot.  This parking lot is a decent size, but will probably be full if you go in the middle of the day.

In short, you’ll want to park here. You can also type in Twin Tanks and Arch Rock Trailhead into your favorite maps app.

The Elements

Joshua Tree National Park is located where the Colorado Plateau meets the Mojave Desert.  And is therefore very dry, hot, and sunny.

You’ll want to pack plenty of water to combat the dry air. And you’ll want to make sure to bring plenty of sunscreen and any type of sun protection you prefer.  It can get extremely hot here if you visit in the summer months.

But enough about the details, let’s check out the trail!

Joshua Tree has plenty of great hiking, with some trails more challenging than others.  But hiking the Arch Rock Trail is certainly one of the easiest.  Here are the stats!

  • Distance: 1.2 Miles (Out-and-Back)
  • Elevation Gain: <100 feet
  • Time on Trail: 30 – 60 minutes
  • Difficulty: Easy

Now, you can add the quick off-shoot by hiking to Heart Rock and this will add a little distance.  If you have the time, I highly recommend adding this off-shoot.

Our Hike

My husband and I hiked the Arch Rock Trail in early February of 2026.  We arrived right at 6:30am to get our boots on and get started.  It was chilly in the morning, but quickly warmed up.  So pack layers if you are visiting in the winter months.

From the Twin Tanks parking lot, we followed the well-marked trail south before crossing the road.  The sun was rising up ahead of us and it was a gorgeous experience.

We passed a few Joshua Trees on this sandy trail, but very quickly entered into a bit of a rock labyrinth.  Fortunately, there are quite a few brown signs marking the way to Arch Rock.

The Highlight – Arch Rock

Arch Rock in the morning light

Once we turned toward the boulder-filled area, we saw the famous Arch Rock.  This unique structure is different from the arches in Arches National Park, but just as impressive.

We arrived early enough that we had to wait a few minutes before the sun started shining through the arch.  The sunbeams shone through and if you have the desire to see the arch glow, you’ll definitely want to arrive early in the morning.

As we snagged a few photos with our tripod, more people began to arrive.  It definitely wasn’t busy yet, but with such a small area to view the arch, I highly recommend getting there early!

Heart Rock

We then went back the way we came before heading over to Heart Rock.  This heart-like structure is less than a quarter mile away and worth the offshoot if you have time.

The trail is easy to follow, but I would still make sure to have a map or use the AllTrails map feature so you can see where you’re going.

The perfect Valentine’s Day location!

We quickly snagged a photo as other hikers were arriving behind us. And then we returned the way we came all the way back to our vehicle.

So how long did this take us?

Expected Time

My husband and I hiked this trail first thing in the morning on a Saturday to beat the crowds.  We were the first ones to Arch Rock and the second people to Heart Rock.

Once we grabbed our photos, we headed back to our vehicle.  In total, we were on the trail for about 45 minutes before continuing further into the park.
