Hello World and Welcome Travelers to Average Wild Experience!

As you read in my “About Me” page, or maybe didn’t (don’t worry, I’m not offended, but seriously you should go check it out!), my name is Megan Callahan. I’m from a small town, or maybe a medium town, in south eastern PA. I have recently acquired the new title of Mrs. and I am happily married (yes I was a Corona Bride, as many are calling it, but more on that later). I love the outdoors and will try just about anything once.

So how did I come up with the name Average Wild Experience anyway?

A name with meaning is super important to me. So this isn’t a random slew of words thrown together to get your attention, although I do hope they get your attention, but there truly is a meaning. Take a look below for an explanation of each word!

Let’s Start with where AVERAGE came from.

I am an average American lady (girl feels too young and woman feels too old, so bear with me as I use the word Lady). My husband and I aren’t rich, we both have full-time jobs like the average couple. Our house isn’t huge, just like the average homeowner. And when we want to travel, we save our pennies and we do so as cheaply as possible. So this just goes to show that I am an average human. Ok so you might be thinking, then why the heck would I read anything you want to write!? This leads me to the word wild.

WILD

I have a deep love for the wild outdoors! My dad took me hunting and fishing when I was growing up, and my family vacations were camping and hiking trips (yes we took the obligatory trip to Disney World when I was in 5th grade, but that’s besides the point). I have a burning desire to see all of the National Parks in the United States as well as get out of the country and see it all. And lets face it, you can see an awful lot of WILD when you’re hiking and camping. Yes, I still love to hunt and fish and camp and hike, but now I have a new travel partner. My husband and I plan and do all of these adventures together and I can’t wait to share my experiences with you! But hang on, I’m getting ahead of myself.

Finally, EXPERIENCE

Although I would describe myself as average, I have had many unique experiences that I can’t wait to tell you about! I found my love of traveling because of a highly competitive travel softball team I was on. We would travel all over the country to play in front of college scouts. Anyway, we were based in Pennsylavania, but it wasn’t unusual to travel to Florida 3 times in a month, or to fly to California 2 times a year to play. While I was there, my parents and I were able to do some of the “must-do’s” in the area and I realized that I had been bit by the travel bug.

Since college, I have traveled to many different places on a budget and I am itching to see more! I’ve experienced several national parks, many state parks and done a ton of cheap camping and hiking to see the world on a budget. I hope that my travel experiences, and mistakes, will help you all to be successful travelers!

Now that I am married, I will be having new and different experiences as well! Like how we had to change every single piece of our wedding plans due to COVID and the lock down. And how a week after we got married we got an 8 week old puppy. Or the process of buying our house in an incredibly competitive market (GUYS, I’m so serious, we had to pull the trigger and put an offer in on our house within 24 hours of seeing it or there was no shot at getting it) and then when we got in, realized all the work we had to do. It’s been an experience to say the least!

OK, so what can we as readers expect from your blog?

I’m going to start by writing about things that are important to me and that all the traveling details I wish I had known at the time. Also I’ll be writing about past adventures I’ve been on (with or without my husband). I’m going to write about future adventures we go on. I’ll write about my singleness and how I navigated online dating to find my husband. And of course I’ll be giving my take on marriage advice as I navigate my new marriage. Some posts will be deep and real, while others will be light and adventurous.

Whatever I decide to write about, I hope you join me on this thing I call my Average Wild Experience!
