Hiking the Watchman Trail (Zion): Everything to Know

Towering behind the Zion Canyon Visitor Center stands a mountain known as the Watchman. And while this mountain is visible from the parking lot, to get an amazing view of the mountain and the valley below, you’ll want to hike the Watchman Trail Zion.

The Watchman Trail Zion is an easy-to-moderate hike that just about anyone can do.  With beautiful views along most of the trail, this is definitely one to add to your list of Zion’s must dos!

This post will be discussing everything you need to know about the Watchman Trail Zion.  Things like where to park, national park fees, trail stats, and more.  So let’s dive in!

Important Links

Location

Let’s start with the location of the Watchman Trail Zion.  This trail is located right at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center in Zion National Park.  Just past the town of Springdale.

Now if you aren’t staying in Springdale, you’ll be looking at a little bit of driving.  The trailhead is 1 hour from St. George, UT, 5.5 hours from Sedona, AZ and 2.5 hours from Las Vegas, NV.

Fees

Since the Watchman Trail is in Zion National Park, you’ll have to pay a fee to hike here.  Whether you enter the park by foot, on a motorcycle, or in a car, there is a fee.  Here are the standard fees.

  • Standard Vehicle: $35 (Valid for 7 days)
  • Motorcycle: $30 (Valid for 7 days)
  • Per Person (walking): $20 (Valid for 7 days)

The typical person/family/couple will pay the standard fee of $35 per vehicle.   This will give them access to the park for 7 days without any additional fees.

However, if you are planning to visit more than 7 days, there is an Annual Pass Option!

Annual Pass Options

If you plan to enter Zion more than 2 weeks in a year, you’ll want to buy the Annual Pass. But why stop there.  If you want to visit several parks in a year, there are a few different options for you.

  • Annual Pass – $70 (Entrance to Zion National Park for 12 months)
  • America the Beautiful Pass – $80 (Entrance to all federal recreation areas)
  • Senior Annual Pass – $20 (Ages 62+ for Entrance to All Parks)
  • Senior Lifetime Pass – $80 (Ages 62+ for Lifetime Entrance to All Parks)
  • Military Annual Pass – Free (Entrance to All Parks in a year)
  • Military Lifetime Pass – Free (Lifetime Entrance to All Parks)

The annual passes are valid for 12 months and the lifetime passes are valid for a lifetime, hence the name.  With any of these passes in your possession, you and your ID can enter any federal recreation area with a car-full of guests.  My husband and I have saved hundreds by purchasing the America the Beautiful Pass for the last 4 years.

Parking

In order to hike the Watchman Trail in Zion, you’ll need to park at the trailhead.  The trailhead is to the left of the visitor center, so you’ll want to park right by the visitor center.

Be warned, this parking lot fills up CRAZY fast in the mornings.  Especially during the popular times to visit (Fall and Spring).  So I suggest you get here early in the morning or go for an evening hike (after 4pm).

Weather and Climate

Zion National Park is located in a dry, almost arid, climate.  However, because it averages 16 inches of rain per year, it’s not a true desert.  But with this odd mix of climates, you’ll find a mix of cacti, pines, and even tall hardwood trees in Zion.

Because of said rain, you have to be very weather aware when hiking here.  Flooding often occurs in the canyon and can be deadly.

What to Wear

What should you wear while hiking the Watchman Trail in Zion?   You’ll want to wear closed toed shoes.  I always recommend hiking boots with some ankle support, but sneakers will be fine for this trail.  As far as clothes, you’ll want to wear some sort of athletic clothing (shorts, T-shirt, or leggings and longsleeves).

Be aware that there is little cover on this trail, so you’ll want to bring and wear sun protection.  We hiked this trail in late October and the sun was beating down on us.  Make sure you pack plenty of water!

Trail Stats

Hiking the Watchman Trail in Zion is absolutely beautiful.  But what exactly are you getting yourself into?  Let’s look at the stats.

  • Distance: 3.5 miles (out and back)
  • Elevation: 650 feet of elevation gain
  • Time: 1-2 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate

If you are an experienced hiker, this is definitely an easy trail.  However, if hiking is new for you, it would be considered moderate.  Pace yourself and don’t be afraid to slow down.

Our Hike

My husband and I hiked the Watchman Trail Zion in October of 2025.  The trail starts out just across the entrance road from the Visitor Center.  (Find the trailhead and trail map here).

Hiking the Watchman Trail Zion

We followed the trail along the Virgin River, and just across the river is the Watchman Campground.  The trail had us cross the road and then started to gain some elevation.  The trail is primarily dusty-dirt with some rocky sections. (see photo above)

There were a few switchbacks and a few steep areas before we finally started to get an amazing view of the valley below.  We then came to a split in the trail, and we took a right heading to the overlook.

As we looped around to the overlook, we were greeted by a beautiful view of the canyon floor, the town of Springdale, and the Watchman itself.  Take a seat and enjoy the view, or the sunset, from this beautiful spot!

Hiking Back

Once you’ve had your fill, or you’ve seen the sunset, you’ll head back the way you came.  Now that you’re heading downhill, you’ll find this trail is quite easy.  Just be sure to watch your step around the cliff walls.

We spent about 2 hours hiking the Watchman Trail in Zion.  We like to sit and enjoy the view for as long as we can before heading back.  You’ll probably need 1-2 hours to hike this trail.

Camping

If you want easy access to the Watchman Trail, the shuttles, the visitor center and basically all of Zion National Park, you’ll definitely want to go camping in the Watchman Campground.

This campground is newly renovated and is smack dab in all the action!  You would be steps away from the shuttle and you wouldn’t have to worry about all the craziness of the parking lot.

If camping is your jam, check out all the details about the Watchman Campground here.

Things to do in the area

If you’re looking for other things to do in the area, I highly suggest driving about 45 minutes down the road and checking out the Kolob Canyon area of Zion. This area has hardly any visitors and some great hiking too.

If you’re looking for things to do that are a little further away, I highly recommend heading to Cedar Breaks National Monument.  This is another hidden gem of Utah with a fraction of the crowds.

However, if you are looking to cross the other national parks of Utah off your list, you could take a Utah road trip. Head over to Bryce Canyon National Park first, then Capitol Reef National Park, followed by Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park.  All of these places are incredible and need to be visited at least once in your life.

Conclusion

Hiking the Watchman Trail Zion gets you incredible views without hours and hours of effort. This moderate trail can be done by just about anyone and with incredible views, what are you waiting for!?
